  • 18.06.2008

On the 18th till the 19th of June, as a member of the Combating Terrorism Working Group, Mrs. Tatiana Busuncian attended the PfP Consortium Annual Conference on “PfP Consortium - The Next Ten Years Leveraging Consortium Capabilities for Defense Institution Building and Regional Stability”. The event took place at the NATO Headquarters in Brussels (Belgium) and was organized by the Partnership for Peace Consortium of Defense Academies and Security Studies Institutes.

The agenda of the event covered 3 sub-themes: the Role of Defense Education in Defense Institution Building: Case Studies in Defense Education Reform, the Consortium Role in Fostering Regional Stability and the Advanced Educational Methodologies—Resident and E-learning. Moreover the event discussions were also based on the update concerning Consortium and Introduction to the Marketplace. The conference was opened by distinguished speakers from NATO and the US.

After plenary introductions of the sub-themes, the audience was divided into three syndicates that discussed each sub-theme in detail. Participants were assigned to syndicates based on preference chosen beforehand.

The goal of the Conference was mainly focused on generating discussion and analysis on the Consortium role in its second decade to defense institution building and regional stability. By bringing together knowledgeable individuals from all countries involved in a particular region to discuss issues in a calm, academic setting, the Consortium fostered mutual understanding among opinion makers.

In addition to this a great emphasis was given to the role of defense education in defense institution building: case studies in defense education reform. It was pointed out that nowadays the education system must adapt to the new defense institutions and prepare professionals to operate them. It must provide relevant, updated knowledge and inculcate an ability and habit of critical thinking.

And last but not the least, were analyzed the specifics and role of the advanced educational methodologies—resident and e-learning. It was concluded that the advanced educational methodologies have to presume that the traditional way of passing knowledge can be improved and result in quicker and more lasting learning. Examples of such methods include learner-centered education, distance learning, and blended learning.

The event also encouraged the open dialogue, exchange of opinion, knowledge and experience among the participants. Finally the conference denoted a stimulating and fruitful participation that renewed vigor of the Consortium by emphasizing its solid contribution to regional stability through the expansion of knowledge about the most pressing issues impacting stability.
